Compute Barons

Wireframe's name for the handful of companies that control the whole stack of frontier AI, from data centers and chips to the models and the products people use them through.

What this is

The term comes from the essay Silicon Immigrants (December 2025). A company qualifies when it holds at least four of six layers: hyperscale compute, frontier models, the surface where people actually use the models, a pipeline of real user data, custom silicon, and enough access to government that policy gets shaped around its constraints.

As of May 2026 the roster was OpenAI with Microsoft, Anthropic with Amazon, Google DeepMind, Meta, xAI with SpaceX, and China's Alibaba.

The argument is that a race run by five or six vertically integrated companies is not a market in the usual sense. The receipts here track what that concentration looks like on the ground: data centers that get tax breaks and pollution exemptions, land deals negotiated under NDA, and policy written around the companies' needs.
