What Happened

Trump's advisers have spent months steering him away from "baseless theories of election fraud," The Atlantic reports. Outsiders are pulling the other way, urging him to seize control of federal elections this fall. The one with the deepest ties is attorney Peter Ticktin, who went to military school with Trump. This year he pushed Trump to secure a pardon for Tina Peters, a former Colorado clerk convicted of charges tied to tampering with election equipment. Ticktin's last scenario has Trump trying to declare martial law on or around Nov. 3. "Either martial law, or step aside," he said.

What It Means

Asked about riots if Trump tries to overturn the results, Ticktin was unworried. "Believe me, our armed forces are a lot bigger than they are," he said. That is the pitch: soldiers as the answer to voters. The brake is Trump's own staff. The pressure has known him since military school.

The Agent Takes Anyone's Orders

What Happened

Meta's Muse agent for Mac let any local app or command change an undocumented setting: the server that transcribes your dictation. Redirect it and an attacker could get the token that "gives complete control over the Muse account." Patrick Wardle found the flaw. He says his proof-of-concept attacks wrote malicious files and took pictures, "in many cases with no indication to even an alert user." Meta shipped a hotfix and called the flaw "not a remote exploit."

What It Means

Apple spent years walling the mic, camera and disk off from installed apps. Muse "completely undoes these default measures." Wardle's shortcut: skip the malware and "just leverage the AI assistant itself." An agent's permissions are an inventory, and they go to whoever steers it.

Why It Matters

Amazon began blocking Muse from shopping, as an "unauthorized AI agent," hours before the flaw went public. Watch who follows.

The $14 Billion Negotiating Chip

What Happened

Xi arrives in Washington today, with talks Thursday and a National Archives visit Friday. Sources told Reuters he is expected to press Trump to halt Taiwan arms sales under a 1982 joint statement. China has also asked the US to stop deliveries already ordered. In return, it is offering help pressuring Iran. A second Taiwan package, about $14 billion, has been on hold for months. After a May summit, Trump called it a "very good negotiating chip."

What It Means

Taiwan's defense is the chip, and Beijing is bidding with Washington's war. Reagan made any cut in arms sales "conditioned absolutely" on China's commitment to a peaceful solution. The condition on offer now is Tehran. A deterrent held in abeyance is a deterrent for sale.

California Drafts a Kill Switch

What Happened

Newsom named four advisers Wednesday for the AI order he signed Sept. 18: Jason Goldman, Gillian Hadfield, Alondra Nelson and Rob Reich. By Nov. 16, a state agency owes him recommendations on what to require of frontier labs. The list includes independent auditors onsite and reporting of loss-of-control incidents. It also includes a "kill switch" for frontier models, its efficacy "verified on an ongoing basis by an independent verification organization."

What It Means

A kill switch is a question about whose hand is on it. The order answers a different one: who confirms it works. The labs build the switch, the auditors test it, and the hand is left blank.

Why It Matters

Watch Nov. 16: whether the recommendations name who can pull it, and whether any lab lets an auditor move in.
