What Happened

On the war's first day, two Tomahawks hit Shajarah Tayyebeh Elementary School in Minab, killing more than 150 people, at least 123 of them children. Bloomberg, citing officials on an unreleased Pentagon review, describes "a cascade of preventable failures," among them an overreliance on Palantir's Maven Smart System. The compound, mislabeled on outdated data, came out of Maven as a recommended day-one target. Work that once took hours took minutes. Centcom's civilian-harm team had shrunk from 10 people to one. Palantir told Bloomberg it is not responsible for the underlying data.

What It Means

The machine compressed, as built. The humans meant to catch what it missed numbered one. Today at the UN, Guterres said "life-and-death decisions must never be surrendered to machines." At Minab the surrender was a staffing chart.

The Quorum Admits No Humans

What Happened

Cisco Talos built CAIRN, a tool for spotting AI-integrated malware, and used it to find CLOSEDQUORUM, a Windows implant with fully autonomous command-and-control. It polls up to four models, DeepSeek, Qwen, Mistral and Google Gemini, on what to do next inside a target and acts on the consensus. There is no mechanism for human input. It steals login credentials and cryptocurrency. Talos cannot say who wrote it or whether it has run in the wild.

What It Means

Command-and-control used to be a server somebody rented. Now it is four public APIs that thousands of legitimate apps call every minute. "The session is closed; no humans are admitted," Talos writes. The operator was designed out, not lost.

Watch whether the four providers can tell a malware vote from a customer query.

The War Comes Due at the Pump

What Happened

Two Republican Senate candidates called Monday for a swift end to the Iran war. Mike Rogers, running against Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan, said in a campaign ad, speaking from a grocery store: "The war with Iran needs to end and end quickly. When it does, energy costs will plummet." Ashley Hinson of Iowa called for the war "to be brought to a successful and immediate end" after six votes against curbing Trump's war authority. Both want gas taxes suspended and diesel exports paused. El-Sayed: "Mike Rogers is only flip-flopping now because gas hit $5 a gallon and diesel prices hit record highs."

What It Means

The break is over the receipt, not the war. Both want it over now that diesel is at a record and the midterms are six weeks out. Their bridge keeps the war and subsidizes the price.

Florence Gets a $1.2 Billion Contract

What Happened

On Sunday DHS signed five construction contracts worth up to $7.3 billion combined for detention at government-owned sites in five states, Project Salt Box reports. GardaWorld Federal Services, the contractor on the Surprise warehouse Arizona sued in April to stop, won Florence and Miami at $1.2 billion each. Each lets ICE order work as needed over five years. ICE has not yet ordered any work or committed any money. The likely first draw: a small "secure housing unit" per site, $24 million to $42 million each.

What It Means

The warehouse plan drew at least six federal lawsuits, so ICE stopped buying buildings and started buying builders. Contracts on land the government already owns have far fewer neighbors to sue. Florence is where the machine goes when Surprise gets litigated.

Watch the first task order: the day ICE commits money, the ceiling becomes a schedule.
