The Frame

England and Wales police are running two Palantir pilots, and two forces only confirmed it after being asked directly. Louisiana handed Elon Musk 130,000 acres of coastal marsh through a secret negotiation residents read about only after it was finalized. The EPA quietly exempted AI data centers from having to disclose their own pollution. Three different deployments of the same tool: write disclosure out of the deal, and the public finds out last, if it finds out at all. The one place still insisting on being told is the courts, which is exactly where today's fourth story is being fought.

The Forces That Wouldn't Confirm

POLICING INSIGHT · SEP 6

What Happened

England and Wales police are running two Palantir pilots: Nectar, drawing on nine forces, and a second, Leicestershire-led project involving data from five forces across the East Midlands. Forces had refused to confirm or deny involvement until Bedfordshire and Leicestershire recently did.

What It Means

The system processes political opinions, health records, sexual orientation, and data on children and crime victims. Palantir flagged 120-plus young people at risk of abuse in Nectar's first eight days, and the rollout plan is national.

Why It Matters

Former shadow home secretary David Davis wants Parliament to scrutinize the software. Critics say it has entrenched racial profiling elsewhere. Watch whether any force ever publishes what Nectar flags, beyond "120."

130,000 Acres, Sealed by NDA

MORE PERFECT UNION · SEP 4

What Happened

Louisiana governor Jeff Landry announced a SpaceX launch site covering 130,000 acres of coastal marsh near Pecan Island. The legislature had already exempted aerospace companies from property taxes and liability for noise and sonic-boom damage, and NDAs kept the negotiations secret. Residents say they went from knowing nothing to a finalized deal, hearing pieces of it secondhand: as one put it, "nobody being transparent. Nobody."

What It Means

The mechanism is pre-commitment by secrecy: a land decision, a tax exemption, a liability shield, negotiated bilaterally between one company and the governor's office, delivered to residents as a finished deal. Costs stay with the community. Benefits route to Musk.

Why It Matters

Watch the legislative record: the bill numbers and vote dates would confirm when lawmakers slipped the liability shield through, the part residents say they don't remember debating.

The Emissions AI Doesn't Count

MORE PERFECT UNION · SEP 5

What Happened

A study cited by More Perfect Union finds AI-driven drilling gains produce more emissions than AI's own data centers. The energy mix is 80% fossil fuels, so those gains dwarf whatever AI saves in renewables. The EPA has exempted off-grid data center plants from pollution limits, clearing a Texas Amazon facility the video calls the country's single largest emitter. It has separately moved to exempt data centers from disclosing pollution.

What It Means

Similar gas-turbines serve xAI's Memphis campus, where residents report respiratory and cardiovascular complaints. The mechanism: regulatory capture compounding infrastructure concentration, hyperscalers get exempt generation assets, health costs land on communities with no seat at the table.

Why It Matters

Watch the Texas air-quality permit filings, the first document to quantify emissions under the EPA exemption, and the first test of whether "off-grid" means "unaccountable."

The Fight Moved to the Courts

GUARDIAN US · SEP 7

What Happened

Democracy Defenders Fund and the Campaign Legal Center have jointly sued over Trump's 2025 and 2026 executive orders on voting rights. Democracy Defenders Fund alone has run 300-plus cases since 2023 across election, rule-of-law, and anti-corruption work. The administration has lost 23 cases where rulings have been made. The ACLU alone is involved in 26 of 30 legal challenges over the administration's push to seize state voting data.

What It Means

Former DOJ Inspector General Michael Bromwich named the mechanism directly: "The full-out assault on democracy must be addressed through the courts because Congress has proven itself unwilling." That's which branch is actually functioning as a check right now, not a metaphor.

Why It Matters

The DOJ has assigned 1,000 lawyers to monitor voting nationwide and is pushing the Supreme Court to let USPS restrict mail ballots, the channel some 50 million Americans use to vote. Watch which way the Court leans before the midterms.
